How do you establish that your child's eyesight and hearing are okay? The simple answer is to do a check, using simple methods or requesting the assistance of specialists.
But why is this important?
This story will provide you a good reason to ascertain that your child can properly see and hear right from an early age.
I was discussing with an early childhood educator (childcare professional) about how a child responds and behaves amid other children and the childcare worker. In our conversation, this professional told me about a child that showed an unusual behaviour tainted with frequent anger and resentment while in the daycare. Sometimes, this child preferred to be alone when other children are playing. This behaviour went on for months.
One day, the day care worker was demonstrating something on the wall to all the children seated. For some reason, the worker asked the children to put up their hand if they saw what she was doing. All the children raised their hand except this child. Further careful questioning and engagement with this child revealed to this worker that the child was having eyesight challenges. She followed up on this observation by discussing with the child's parents who took the child to an eye specialist. The finding was that this child had very poor eyesight and the specialist prescribed eyeglasses.
When this child started using eyeglasses in the day care, the behaviour changed dramatically to being a happy and engaging child, wanting to play with every other child and creating spectacular designs from the toys and drawing sheets. Even at home, the parents noticed how happier and pleasant their child had become.
The big lesson here is that frustration can lead to improper behaviours in children (and even adults). These frustrations can emerge from an inability to use the sense of sight, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling effectively.
An early check by health care professionals will be very helpful in diagnosing correcting things.
